Firstly the common /. anagram: IANAL. I Am Not A Lawyer. But I’m surprised that Lady Gaga’s legal advisors think they can get away with it to be honest. Looking at Baby Gaga and Lady Gaga, one being a breast milk ice cream, and one being a singer, there’s very little similarity. Even if they used the same name, a name would probably be judged different enough to be held seperately by each - like Apple Corps vs Apple Computer. And that’s if it were Lady Gaga. The fact that there’s an entire word, 50% of the overall name different… And in the context of Babies, Gaga is the sort of noise they’re commonly known to make. That’d be a hard case to prove that having two syllables in front of Gaga was indeed a deliberate copy of a different set of two syllables. The only thing they’ve got behind them is a huge wad of cash to make a court case protracted and costly for the defendant. Aka Bully-boy tactics.
Wonder if the EFF or some similar legally inclined, commonsense people would fight it? Though I’d hope the courts would see sense and throw the damn thing out as soon as it reached their Inbox…
The other, entirely unlikely, but definitely amusing alternative is to hope some of the surviving members of Queen come out and ask what Lady Gaga is thinking by misappropriating their song title, namely Radio Gaga? Could you imagine the awkward issues of hypocrisy that THAT scenario would raise?
One last observation: The syllables GaGa (がが) when translated to Japanese mean ‘rugged’. However, add a few more and they become Ga ga tsuyoi (ががつよい/我が強い) which, according to the Jim Breen’s excellent online Japanese dictionary, means egoistic; selfish; self-willed. How appropriate…
